Tram Experience: gastronomy on the rails of Brussels

A gourmet dinner served in a moving tram: this is the unique experience offered by Visit.Brussels. With its flavours, conversations and urban landscapes, the journey aboard the Tram Experience leaves no one unmoved.

Imagine: you are comfortably seated on a tram converted into a restaurant, glass in hand, cruising down the avenues of Brussels. On the menu are six courses during the week and seven at the weekend, prepared by a renowned chef and carefully served on board. Launched in 2012 by Visit.Brussels to celebrate the year of gastronomy, the Tram Experience has been running for over a decade. ‘The project was supposed to last a year, but it worked so well that we relaunched it every year,’ says Julie De Pauw, Business Developer for the Tram Experience. The success continues.

Brussels, dinner is served!

On board, refinement is key. From Tuesday to Sunday, a six-course menu is offered; on Friday and Saturday, there are seven courses, including an extra course. Every two months, the dish of the day changes according to the season, encouraging guests to return. The 2025 season (September-October) kicks off with a menu designed by Kevin Lejeune, who worked at La Canne en Ville and now works at Chaga, and prepared, in a logistically adapted version, by caterer Thibault Granville from Taste Great. The chef will be joined by other chefs from Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia and even the Côte d'Azur.

The route varies depending on roadworks, but the tram departs from Place Poelaert, heading towards Louise, La Cambre, then Avenue de Tervueren to Stockel (although the route may vary, according to Visit.Brussels). The city lights never fail to make an appearance. In the tram, 36 seats are divided into tables of two or four.

For businesses, the concept takes on another dimension: privatisation of an entire carriage or tram, images displayed on screens, the option to leave goodies or personalise menus (vegetarian, allergies, etc.). ‘We want to offer an all-inclusive experience, prepared with customers in advance, right down to the seating arrangements,’ explains Julie De Pauw. Beci will be testing the experience on 2 December, for the launch of the festive menu, created by Brussels chef Grégoire Gillard, in a magical atmosphere under the capital's illuminations.

Mobility & Gastronomy

Beyond the food itself, the Tram Experience conveys a different image of the region. For Visit.Brussels, it's about combining mobility, heritage and culinary art. ‘It also gives the STIB a different image, not just that of a utilitarian transport system,’ emphasises the business developer. The route takes in some of the city's most iconic locations, as well as some more unexpected corners, offering a new perspective on Brussels.

Behind this apparent fluidity, the organisation is meticulous. Each menu is tested in advance to ensure that it can withstand the unexpected movements of the tram, and the on-board kitchens are well equipped (hobs, ovens). Waiters and waitresses learn to work with one hand free so they can hold on, while specially trained drivers adapt their driving style. If the brakes are applied too sharply, the entire service can be thrown into disarray: the teams have already experienced this first-hand.

Practical information

The feedback speaks for itself: satisfied guests, a warm atmosphere and attentive service. For individuals, the price is €250 for a table of two, including drinks (€125 per person). For companies, the complete privatisation of the tram or certain 16- or 20-seat carriages costs between €3,000 and €5,580 excluding VAT for an all-inclusive package.

Tram Experience embodies the best Brussels has to offer: an invitation to share and discover, with a touch of fantasy and mastery. The region can be savoured in a different way: a bite, a turn, a forkful, and the scenery has already changed.
