Brussels, 24 October 2025

With 185 nationalities and hundreds of languages spoken within its borders, Brussels is a multilingual and multicultural capital. To celebrate this richness and promote multilingualism among Brussels residents, the Brussels Council for Multilingualism is organising the first Brussels Multilingualism Week. From 9 to 14 February 2026, numerous activities will be organised at the Bourse and throughout the region.

Multilingualism and cultural diversity are Brussels' strengths and are at the heart of its identity!

Constantinople, Alexandria, London, Dubai, New York... All the great cities, past and present, have attracted migrants from all over the world. In line with these glorious cities, Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

185 nationalities and hundreds of languages coexist here. More than 60% of residents were not born in Belgium. One in four students is international. These figures testify to Brussels' diversity and show how open it is to the world.

This richness is an invaluable asset that should be celebrated and nurtured. We all stand to gain from it.

For every citizen, who can learn from others and exchange ideas. For businesses, which gain access to a pool of multilingual talent, essential in a globalised economy. For Brussels itself, which can thrive on fertile ground.

This linguistic and cultural diversity also presents a challenge. Far from considering languages a source of discord, Brussels is committed to multilingualism.

On the initiative of the Brussels Council for Multilingualism and in collaboration with the Brussels-Capital Region, numerous activities will take place throughout Brussels from 9 to 14 February 2026. As a grand finale, on Saturday 14 February, the Palais de la Bourse will host stands and debates on the challenges of multilingualism.

This Brussels Multilingualism Week is intended to be a celebration by and for the people of Brussels. Whether you are a school, a company, an association, a media outlet or a local authority, you are invited to become a partner in this unique initiative and to propose your own activity promoting multilingualism. It can take place at the Bourse or on your own premises.

If you are interested, please complete the online form before 15 November.
