On September 25, 2025, the Federation of Belgian Chambers of Commerce will celebrate its 150th anniversary. This milestone is not only a moment to reflect on the past but, more importantly, an opportunity to look ahead.

“We are 150 years young, not old,” says President René Branders. “Our mission today is more relevant than ever.”

The roots of Belgium’s chambers of commerce run deep. The first was established in Bruges in 1665, followed by chambers in Ghent and Brussels. The founding of the Federation in 1875 marked the start of a new chapter: supporting independent, privately governed chambers that remain close to their local entrepreneurs.

Today, Belgian Chambers unites thirteen regional chambers and over forty bilateral chambers abroad. This growth has been made possible through a rigorous accreditation system and several waves of mergers in the late 20th century.

“With the expansion of structures and alliances such as AKT, Voka, Beci, and AVED-IHK, we are both deeply rooted locally and strongly connected internationally,” explains Managing Director Wouter Van Gulck. “We combine local proximity with global reach.”

Through international networks like Eurochambres and the ICC, Belgian chambers maintain direct contact with decision-makers at both European and global levels—one of their defining strengths.

“No other organization supports entrepreneurs on as many levels at once,” says Branders. “From securing an environmental permit at the local level to seizing an export opportunity in Asia.”

Yet the core principle remains unchanged: the chamber as a bridge-builder. Between companies, between entrepreneurs and public authorities, and between local needs and international opportunities. As Van Gulck puts it, “We are a trusted third party in an increasingly complex world.”

With 150 years of history as a solid foundation, Belgian Chambers continues to shape a future where entrepreneurship, cooperation, and international connectivity are central. Branders concludes:

“We connect worlds—and we’ll keep doing so for the next 150 years.”
