Brussels, September 10, 2025 – As part of its global responsible water management strategy, Google, in partnership with Agua Segura, is launching a new project in Belgium to detect and prevent water losses in community buildings near its data center. The initiative will be carried out by Shayp, a Belgian water technology company, which will deploy its precision monitoring technology to protect local resources and strengthen community water resilience.

This project is part of Google’s broader commitment to replenish more water than it consumes and to improve water quality and ecosystem health in the communities where it operates.

“This partnership with Shayp highlights our innovative solutions for responsible water management. Using technology to detect and fix leaks means less waste, reduced costs for universities, schools and public buildings, and a more sustainable future for communities around our data centers,” said Ben Townsend, Global Head of Infrastructure & Sustainability at Google.

Technology supporting community water resilience

Founded in Belgium, Shayp has established itself as a leader in precision water monitoring, already saving more than eight billion liters per year across over 9,000 monitored buildings. The company’s connected monitoring devices will be installed in non-residential properties near Google’s data center to detect often invisible leaks. Shayp’s system collects water consumption data every 30 seconds and uses AI-powered analytics to instantly flag anomalies, enabling rapid intervention and preventive maintenance.

This technology addresses a critical gap in infrastructure: studies show that 95% of water leaks go undetected, leading to significant waste in schools, universities and public facilities. By enabling early detection and preventive maintenance, the project aims to significantly reduce water losses, lower operational costs for community institutions, and support sustainable water management.

This partnership with Google demonstrates how technology can deliver verified water savings where they are most needed,” said Grégoire de Hemptinne, Co-founder and Managing Director of Shayp. Our precision monitoring approach ensures that every liter saved is measured and verified, delivering guaranteed results instead of mere projections. We are proud to support Google’s responsible water management goals while serving local communities.
