How EULEP Bridges the Gap Between SMEs and Technology

The EULEP programme (European Learning Network for VET), co-funded by the European Union, helps SMEs integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR). Birgit Arens, Senior Project Manager at Eurochambres, reflects on this initiative and takes stock of its impact.

What crucial gap did EULEP bridge between SMEs’ expectations and the vocational training offer?

EULEP focused on digitalisation to identify companies’ training needs regarding AI and VR. The conclusion was clear: the vast majority of companies were not yet using these technologies simply because they did not see their practical value. Nevertheless, there was unanimous agreement on the need to train staff in these areas. Based on these findings, we developed our courses.

Thanks to the joint efforts of the partners, EULEP was able to offer flexible and modular continuing vocational training programmes tailored to the real needs of companies wishing to embrace new technologies, while keeping the human factor at the centre.

What was the biggest challenge for the EULEP team?

As with any European project bringing together different cultures and interests, I believe the biggest challenge lies in finding common ground that works for all stakeholders involved. This is essential to create a solid foundation and move forward in the desired direction.

What strong message would you like to send to the European Commission regarding future funding programmes?

EULEP is co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. Eurochambres has a clear vision of the key priorities Erasmus+ should maintain within the next multiannual financial framework.

Erasmus+ must remain a mobility-focused programme that strengthens European competitiveness by giving SMEs access to qualified staff with an international outlook. A budget increase would be welcome, but it should be accompanied by a dedicated budget for vocational education and training, simplified and fully digital procedures, and clear guarantees that mobility remains at the core of the programme.
