Brussels, September 4, 2025 – Back to deadlock in Brussels following yet another breakdown in negotiations. Beci and the sectoral federations are joining forces to declare a state of emergency.
On June 9, 2024, the people of Brussels fulfilled their democratic duty. Today, September 4, 2025, there is still no fully functioning government. This situation is dramatic, both for the Region and for our democracy, which is currently facing a crisis of confidence and a rise in populism. It is equally dramatic for Brussels businesses and for the economic attractiveness of our Region.
Beci and the sectoral federations have mobilized on several occasions to stress the urgency of forming a government in Brussels. We have also aligned with trade unions and civil society. Today, in the face of yet another deadlock, the entire economic sector is declaring a state of emergency. The message remains the same: Brussels urgently needs a fully functioning government!
Brussels is on tsunami alert:
• 30,000 Brussels residents will soon be without benefits.
• A surge in violence linked to drug trafficking.
• An untenable budgetary and financial situation.
Urgent files are piling up:
• A reform of the labour market and training is necessary following the federal reform of unemployment benefits.
• One in five people do not feel safe in Brussels. This is a major obstacle to its economic attractiveness. Security and a sense of safety must be restored for Brussels residents, workers, shopkeepers, the hospitality sector, and cultural actors who keep our capital alive but are suffering from this situation.
• The 2026 budget must rise to the challenges and requires decisions that have so far been postponed (Renolution subsidies, export subsidies, etc.).
• An ambitious industrial strategy, combined with an adapted logistics mobility policy, must be deployed without delay to address the Region’s economic and social challenges.
We call on all democratic political parties to come together around the table to build a positive and ambitious project for Brussels.
This project must:
• Live up to the strengths and wealth of Brussels.
• Contribute to prosperous and sustainable socio-economic development.
It is time to build Brussels’ future collectively, to put an end to exclusivity, to dare to engage in dialogue, and to make compromises. This is the very essence of politics.
Enough is enough – in other words: get to work!
